Diplomático Rum Blanco makes a splash
Upscale vodkas, gins and clear tequilas are not uncommon, but expensive, high quality white rum is a rare commodity.
Dawn Of The Great White
Recently, some outstanding great white rums have come on the market, but the question remains: will consumers pay top dollar for an exception white rum to be mixed in traditional rum drinks?
Diplomático Rum introduced their Rum Blanco recently in Florida, with other markets to soon follow. The first samples of this ultra-premium white rum, aged six to ten years for incredible smoothness, were given to bartenders and mixologists at upscale bars and restaurants in South Florida, such as the Florida Room at the Delano Resort on Miami Beach, known for their exceptional cocktails and talented bar staff.
The first samples were coveted by senior members of the bar team like John Lermayer and Adam Delguidice, who delighted in experimenting with the new white rum. They immediately began to design unique cocktails to demonstrate the special qualities of this rare aged white spirit, recently awarded an exceptional rating (93) by the Beverage Tasting Institute of Chicago.
Great White Rum Cocktails
John created an authentic Hemingway Daiquiri, made with fresh lime and grapefruit juices, balanced with a bit of sugar. The mixture is shaken with crushed ice to be well chilled, then poured neat into a martini glass with a thin round wheel of lime floating on top. The results were outstanding.
Adam created a classic Sazerac cocktail featuring a bit of absinthe, one cube of sugar and three dashes of aromatic bitters, blended with Rum Blanco. He finished off the drink by squeezing the rind of an orange and lighting the oils on fire as they squirted from the fruit peel. The results were awesome.
The Gifted Rums Guide tried his hand at pairing this fine rum with a simple sour mixture he created called Barefoot Juice, which is made according to the formula below.
Barefoot Juice
11 oz coconut water
1 oz fresh key lime juice
1.5 oz cane syrup
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
2 dashes Angostura Orange Bitters
Preparation: combine these ingredients in a squirt bottle and shake well.
The Barefoot Juice is a subtle mixer that allows the unique flavors of fine rums to shine. Rather than dominate, the understated nuances of lime, cane and coconut in the mixture enhance the natural characteristics of quality rums. Mixed with Diplomático Rum Blanco, the result is the Barefoot Diplomat.
The Barefoot Diplomat
2 oz Diplomático Rum Blanco
2 oz Barefoot Juice
Preparation: fill a shaker with ice cubes and add rum and mixture. Shake vigorously for at least 20 seconds. Pour into Collins glass half filled with ice and serve with a thin stick of sugar cane. Enjoy.
Diplomático’s new Rum Blanco is not your average white rum. It’s especially warm, smooth and rich compared to other clear cane spirits, offering a premium taste profile for world-class drink recipes.
Diplomático is also noted for their exceptional fine aged rums, including Añejo, Reserva and Reserva Exclusiva.
